Simone Charles is someone we’ve admired long before Halseene’s launch, for more reasons than one. We were so ecstatic when she agreed to meet up near her home in London and share more of herself with us.
Between running her body-positive blog and curve modeling all on the side of a full-time job, we don’t just admire Simone for juggling it all, we adore her for killing it as the boss babe she is. When we asked Simone why it was so important to create her own platform, she explained how years of working in the industry gave her a ton of insight; she needed an outlet to share. While “Instagram is all about the curated images and the short snappy captions, The Curve Board is more of a raw, honest, from-the-heart encounter.” We applaud her for using multiple platforms to reach more curvy babes.

Stepping into the fashion industry at the age of 18, Simone quickly found out how difficult it was being a plus-size, black woman trying to make her mark. “There was almost no place for me,” she said. “We [the plus-sized community] need a bigger slice of the fashion pie because we don’t get the attention or respect we deserve!” Once brands started accepting more size diverse women, Simone’s career blossomed. She pays homage to the great Precious Lee & Philomena Kwao for paving the way, and even more still, to women like Lizzo for being “so bold, brash, and unapologetic”. On our end? We’re thrilled that the curve community has yet another bodacious role model showing everyone that they CAN do it all.

When we asked Simone what would she say to someone who is struggling to embrace their true self— “I would ask them to look in the mirror and think: whose opinion really matters the most? Your mum? Your sisters? Your followers? The answer should always be YOU. Your opinion matters the most because you are the only person in the world who will live with you till the moment you die.” And to that, we say HALyass.

We all have curves and we should be able to rock them through all walks of life. That is why we created Halseene: to bring love, comfort, and value to babes of all shapes and sizes, showing them that they are just as valuable as the next girl. We’re so honoured that Simone gave us an even deeper look into her world, not only offering just a little piece of the fashion pie but the whole damn snack.
